“One of our activities is called 'circle time', in which children tell their stories. Child abuse is a great problem in this country. We have a garden where we grow our own vegetables, some of which are sold to buy corn. We also teach the children how to recycle properly.
We have about six-seven improvised classrooms where we teach the children to sing, play instruments, the history and geography of Tanzania, and English: their only hope in this country and its strong tourist trade”.
We cross one of the many banana plantations in Mto Wa Mbu and with Elize, the orphanage coordinator, and some of the volunteers who just got here from Holland …
… we get to the Sarakasi House, which is the name of the rented building in which the children stay. Elize is incredibly enthusiastic about this place, she talks to us with such admiring passion and determination …
She shows us the vegetable garden they cultivate and from which they manage to earn something by selling part of the harvest; they improvise classrooms with a simple sheet supported only by timber…
… separate waste collection.
We go inside. While the children study in very small classrooms that also act as offices and storage room…
… there’s people making food for everybody.
We talk to the teachers, the volunteers, and then …
… we all sit together under a tree and listen to the story of Paulo, a boy who had to hunt birds to eat.
We found out their world, their energy …
… they play, they sing, they dance … Do you want to read the whole report? Go to Travelbook and I Peolpe.
