Top 5 Destinations for an Active Winter Vacation

With only a few weeks until the end of the year, everybody is starting to plan their vacation. There is nothing better than getting away with your family and friends after a long year of hard working. Everybody has a different idea of vacation, some like to lay down and watch movies others like to go out and party and then there are people who love to participate in all sorts of activities.

In this article, we will focus on the last group, people who want to spend their vacation skiing, snowboarding, swimming, surfing, etc. But where should you go? What are the best places for active winter vacation? We have put together a list of vacation locations that are, in our opinion, absolutely the best at this time of the year.

1. The Swiss Alps

There is no better place for skiing and snowboarding than the Swiss Alps. This location is popular all year-round, but the winter is when it shows its true colors. Beautiful scenery, wild and untamed nature, some of the best skiing tracks, amazing hotels and resorts are just some of the many attractions this place has to offer. If you want to get up every morning and hit the slopes all day long, Swiss Alps are a perfect place for you.

Also, if you decide to visit Swiss Alps you must try sledding or sledging. You will get on Swiss sleds and ride down the mountain for several kilometers. A truly fun and unique activity that you can experience only on the mountain like this.

2. Big Sur, California

This incredible region of California’s coastline if a great place for activities like hiking, camping, backpacking, fishing, etc. You can swim in Big Sur River and camp among the redwoods at state parks in this region. Additionally, you can visit Esalen Institute, a retreat center with hot springs and amazing scenery. Perfect months are December and January because it is not so crowded and prices go down a bit.

3. Lakes Region, Chile

Chile is a beautiful country, it offers a wide range of activities all year long, but the most popular and busiest time of the year is in January and February. Even though the whole country has a lot to offer, we will focus only on Lakes Region in the southern part of Chile, specifically Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas. This region is strongly influenced by Swiss and German architecture and has a lot of amazing restaurant and cafes.

As for the activities, you can rock climb, go sea kayaking, hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, etc. There are a number of national parks, but you will want to visit Vicente Perez Rosales National Park, the oldest one in the country. It is full of untouched lakes and rivers, you can visit the rainforest and sharp-peaked volcanoes.

4. New Zealand

The island nation of New Zealand is probably the only one that can offer skiing and surfing in the same day. This piece of land is heaven on Earth for all adrenalin junkies. If you want to be active on your winter vacation, then this is a place for you. On the North Island you can surf, snorkel, dive, swim and on top of that, there are forests that are perfect for hiking and exploration. On the other hand, the South Island offers great tracks and walking paths that lead through forests, rivers, lakes, etc.

If you decide to surf keep in mind that the waters are cold, so packing wetsuit and other surfing equipment is necessary. If you don’t have one there are online shops like Natural Necessity that offer everything that you need for surfing and for great prices too.

5. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Last on our list is hiking paradise in Cambodia. Angkor Wat is a masterpiece of architecture and a great place to explore. This temple was built in honor to the Hindu god Vishnu, but was later turned into a Buddhist shrine. You can hike through Cambodian jungle and explore this mesmerizing place for hours. Also, there is so much to see and learn about this unique culture.

And that is all. As you can see there are plenty of options for all types of activities from surfing and swimming to skiing and hiking. Pick the one that you like and book a plane ticket, you will surely have a great time if you visit places from our list.
