For anyone who has been even once in Brussels, Grand Place is definitely one of the most known places! It is a very famous European square dated back to the 15th century, which for many people is considered as one of the most beautiful squares in the world!
Grand Place is an excellent example of architecture and building decoration and is therefore very famous. Its history began in the 11th century, where the square was the place where fairs were hosted.
Two centuries later, at Grand Place, a large textile market was held. Around 1500, the square became a commercial area. The traders, in order to facilitate their needs, constructed around it the buildings of their trade unions.
At that time around 48 trade unions were based in Brussels, which shows us how important commercial city it was. In 1695, the French besieged Brussels. All the buildings of the trade unions were destroyed from their cannons and only the City Hall Tower was rescued. The traders did not leave Grand Place. They returned and rebuilt the buildings of their trade unions, even brighter than before.
Today, the buildings surrounding Grand Place are considered an excellent example of the Italian-Flamand Baroque architecture.
At Grand Place, 39 corporate buildings are now rescued. The most famous of all is the Town Hall that stretches across the southwestern side of the square. Its facade is adorned with stone statues.
Other famous buildings are La Maison du Roi, La Maison des Ducs de Brabant, La Maison de la Brouette, Le Sac, La Louve, L’Étoile, etc.
Today, in these wonderful buildings, there are restaurants, cafes, bars and hotels, but this function does not shake the beautiful picture of the square!
