Brunch in Thessaloniki, Greece (Thessbrunch)

Brunch is a combination of  breakfast and lunch and is a favorite habit for Europeans, especially on weekends. Brunch, is now popular  not only in Europe but also in most countries of the world. Lately, it has also become very popular in Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece.

Most of the city’s hotels, in cooperation with the  association of hoteliers, have now begun to offer a high-quality brunch every weekend, something that Greek and foreign visitors have already started to join!

This effort/action has  its own name: THESSBRUNCH.

I had the opportunity to try the brunch on two different hotels in the city and I will share with you my impressions. Grand Hotel Palace and  Mediterranean Hotel Palace. These are two of the best five stars hotels in Thessaloniki and they both belong to the Luxury Hotels group.

In both hotels the brunch was based on Greek gastronomy and Greek products of excellent quality. The tastes and the flavors were great due to the excellent selection of products  the dishes were created.

Dishes inspired by Greek cuisine, with extra creative touches by the chefs of the two hotels,  gave great value to our culinary experience.

In both hotels sweet and savory delicacies were offered and of course the koulouri of Thessaloniki, a curled bread and sesame cookie, which is very popular in Greece and especially in Thessaloniki.

Pies, local cheeses and sausages as well as fresh sandwiches completed the brunch to both hotels.

At Grand Hotel Palace fresh honey donuts “loukoumades”  (made from dough fried in hot oil and immediately poured with honey) were served, a recipe especially popular in Greece.

At the Mediterranean Palace Hotel delicious sweet bougatsa was served, also a very popular dish of Greece, which is taken mainly as a breakfast. This is a pie with a sweet filling, sprinkled with powdered sugar.

In both hotels great importance was given to selected coffee flavors and to  fresh seasonal fruit . Long buffets with many different tastes were available and everyone could form and enjoy his own personal brunch!

This new habit of brunch is gaining more and more friends in the beautiful city of Thessaloniki! More and more of us are choosing to spend our Saturday and Sunday mornings, together with our family or friends, tasting delicious dishes, enjoying Greek flavors and selected coffees during brunch time.

In both Grand Hotel Palace and Mediterranean Palace Hotel,  I enjoyed an amazing brunch,  I had a great time with friends from 12 am until four in the afternoon, tasting adorning flavors and excellent coffee, chatting and relaxing, promising to join the next brunch together again!

Maria Athanssopoulos was born in the city of Tripoli, Greece, 1968. She has worked as a lawyer for almost 20 years.
