Become acquainted with Berlin!

Berlin is a fascinating city just bursting at the seams with excitement. The list of activities is never-ending and the food choices for a vegetarian exceeded my expectations.

Public transportation is fantastic; however, I preferred walking to experience the city like a local and to see as much as possible. The people were quite friendly and I never grew tired of being asked where I was from because of my accent (personally, I prefer the German accent).

I stayed at an Airbnb that I highly recommend. The host is lovely and her apartment is situated in a top-notch neighborhood. link

Hopefully your visit will include a special street surprise like mine – seeing an adorable couple juggle at a red light for tips. Here are my top picks to become acquainted with Berlin:

East Side Gallery – Some of the most amazing street art you will ever see!

Cool Runnings at YAAM (Young African Art Market) – A unique beach bar and market.

DDR Museum – So many hands-on activities for kids and adults at this engrossing museum.

Tiergarten Park – Plan to spend the entire day here, because there is much to see and do in a peaceful setting. I adored the landscape, statues, and especially chilling at Café am Neuen See's biergarten by the lake.

Berlin Cathedral – Magnificent inside and out. I was fortunate to visit during an actual service.

Brandenburg Gate – A landmark that shouldn't be missed.

Das Meisterstück – A phenomenal restaurant featuring local, organic ingredients and a distinguished beer selection.

Chipps – Another delectable restaurant fit for a vegetarian.

Anand – Authentic Indian cuisine with attentive service.

Oranium – Offers an extensive menu in a beautiful, vintage-like setting.

Bar Van Gogh – I love everything about this place! The décor is spot on with candles and reproductions of Van Gogh art (hence the name). Great selection of drinks and a wonderful piano player tickling the ivories.

Bellini Lounge – The place for out of this world craft cocktails made by bartenders who take their job seriously.

BöseBubenBar – A really charming cafe for coffee and food during the day, and drinks in the evening. I could spend hours at this cool venue.

I have been living in Chicago for the past 7 years until a recent return to my hometown of Madison, WI. For the past 3 years, I was a freelance writer for the Chicago Tribune. It started with a blog about Couchsurfing and led to a second blog about events and venues in Chicago.I enjoyed writing so much that I started my own blog and travel/leisure Facebook page. I travel as much as possible and can't wait to write about it when I get home. My current addiction is Europe. I can't get enough and explore new countries every year.
