Kastoria is a well-known tourist destination in Greece that lately is being discovered by visitors of other nationalities too. The great advantage of this city is the lake that gives the city its romantic tone.
The city is built on a peninsula that enters the lake and population is around 20.000. Kastoria is famous for its fur industry which is the main occupation of the locals. The city is very old and was built over the ancient city of Keletron, mentioned by Tito Livio, the Roman historian.
Another characteristic of the city besides the lake are the endless byzantine churches the visitor will come across. There are around 70 of them in the city! But they are not the only architectural treasures to marvel! There are also wonderful old mansions of the 18th century all around, wonderful examples of the local architectural skills.
The lake of Kastoria is called Orestiada. It’s 9.5meters deep and covers a total area of 28 square kilometers. It’s a protected water biotope of many species (200 in total). Right next to the lake there’s a beautiful road that goes all around its perimeter. It’s the perfect walk if someone wants to experience the unique physical beauty of the lake at all its glory!
Trees with branches hanging towards the water, the soft lake wind, the singing and tweeting of the birds on the trees, they synthesize a one of a lifetime country experience for the visitor. If you’re not so fond of walking, no need to worry, the distance may also be covered by car.
Kastoria is a place that offers many activities. You may engage yourself in walking, hiking, biking, pay a visit to the winter resort of Vitsi for winter sports or for those who are true funs of the lake, they may engage themselves in rowing!
The local cuisine is delicious and I suggest by all means that you try it! Kastoria is definitely a destination like no other! It’s a city worthwhile to visit and be bewitched by its mysterious beauty and the secrets of the lake!
