Holy Monastery of Panagia Soumela
The modern monastery of Panagia Soumela, which is a universal orthodox symbol, lies on the divine Vermio mountain at Kastania of Imathia perfecture. The holy icon of Panagia (Virgin Maty) was transported to Greece by the monk Amvrossios Soumeliotis from the old monastery in Trapezounta of Pontos. The Icon remained at the Athens Byzantine Museum for 20 years, and in the year 1951 was transported to the modern monastery of Panagia Soumela at Kastania. The monastery is not only a powerful orthodox symbol but a powerful symbol of the Hellenism of Pontos and it’s struggles as well. Don’t forget the intiniate relationship and worship that Greeks all over the world have for Panagia, which we consider as the “Mother” of Greece. The holy monastery, which built in a picturesque natural environment, is an extraordinary destination for Greeks and Orthodoxs all over the world in general.
