Mountainous Greece: A short presentation of Zagorochoria!

The name refers to the about 40 mountain villages that lie to the northeast of the city of Ioannina. The landscape is unique. The Zagorochoria have been a popular tourist destination for many years now. Voidomatis river and the Vikos Gorge add a particular color to the area. Epirus is one of the most beautiful places in Greece. In recent years Via Egnatia has made Epirus more accessible to visitors from all over Greece. Zagorohoria have always been a famous destination for mountain lovers, because of their particular natural beauty. The most famous villages are Aristi, Vikos, Mikro and Megalo Papigo Monodendri, Elatochori, Tsepelovo and Upper and Lower Pedina, but this does not mean that other villages are deprived of natural beauty. The visitor will be impressed by Vikos Gorge, the green waters of Voidomatis river, the stone bridges, but mainly by the natural beauty of the area!

Voidomatis River

Voidomatis river, a 215 kilometers length branch of Aoos river, is located in the prefecture of Ioannina in Epirus. It flows around Konitsa, in one of the most beautiful route crossings of Greece with its most spectacular view being the mountain scenery at Gorge Vikos. The area has been declared as a national park since 1973.

The Stone Forest of Zagorohoria

The mountain route of Monodedri goes through the Vicos Creek and holds an unexpected geological surprise to its visitors besides the breathtaking natural beauty. At a certain point of the route… the landscape starts changing dramatically… the visitor comes face to face with huge rocks rising up to the sky, created by multiple layers of stone. This phenomenon looks so much like trees created of stone that it is known as the Stone Forest.

It is a traditional village, built in the architectural style of the region. It has narrow, stone streets which are very romantic and picturesque. You may visit the convent of Agia Paraskevi or admire the beautiful mansions of the village. Make sure you also pay a visit to the Vikos Gorge, an unforgettable experience! In addition to various options for accommodation, you will also discover the local cuisine delights!
