Un thé à la menthe, s’il vou plaîs!

The moroccan tea, atay, besides being a national drink, is also a sign of friendship, generosity, hospitality and, above all, a tradition!

In Morocco link, the history of tea is debatable. There are some historians who argue that its introduction in this culture took place in the 12th century B.C. with the arrival of the phoenicians. Others, argue that it was in the 18th century during the growing trade between Maghreb and Europe. Regardless of how or when was that it appeared in the country, it’s a wonderful drink, which gives more flavor to the moroccan cuisine and delights those who drink it!

Although it began as a luxurious ritual, associated with an elevated status, quickly spread to the entire population, reaching the caravans of the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains. Today, is part of the daily life of moroccan families who serve it throughout the day, with or without food or as companion of a good conversation. In fact, it occupies a so important role in social life that, in jest, it is often called the moroccan or berber whiskey!

And what makes it so special? The art with which it is prepared and the ceremony with which it is served! A traditional teapot, samovar, of moroccan tea has placed step by step, gunpowder green tea, boiling water, a large handful fresh mint leaves and sugar. Served in a traditional tray, the sinya, the small glasses are, many with elegant design, where tea is regularly shed, between half and a meter in height, in order to improve the taste, create some foam and allow the host to demonstrate his art of serving! The first served tea is not consumed, and serves only to heat the cup, as well as the host verify that it meets the desired flavor. In the second round, the taste of your perdition begins!
