A Gorilla naming ceremony -Kwita Izina

Kwita Izina is an annual event to name baby gorillas in Rwanda . Kwita Izina is inspired by the ancient Rwandan tradition of naming babies soon after they are born . This year's event was held on 1st July in Kinigi which is located in the Musanze district (a two hour drive from Kigali ).Musanze is only a two hour drive from Kigali, one hour away from Rubavu (Gisenyi) and the Congo border, and also 25 kilometers from the Ugandan border.

The event is held at the foothills of the Volcanoes mountains whose volcanoes park is home to the gorillas .

During the ceremony 18 new born gorillas were named , this also was a celebration to mark 10 years of promoting tourism and conservation in Rwanda .

The names given to gorillas differ according to the group of the gorilla

the ceremony has seen 161 baby gorillas named since its inception in 2003 . Rwanda has a total of 295 gorillas .

The naming ceremony also shows a celebration of the Rwandan culture through dance .
