Bringing in the New Year at Asiatique

It's a large, beautiful night market situated on the ChaoPraya River in Bangkok. It has a giant white Ferris Wheel for [romantic] enjoyment. And it houses a cabaret with Thai cultural performances such as the popular ladyboy show, Calypso. The name of this nightlife hot spot is Asiatique. I celebrated last year's New Year's holiday there with some friends. And man was it swarming with crowds of folks.

When we had arrived that night a concert had been going on, which attracted so many people. I had only been there once before when there was time and space to explore all of Asiatique's charming attractions from the international food court to the flea market style clothing shops to the massage vendors. But my friends and me [on my second visit there] only had time and space to get something to eat before waiting to ring in the New Year.

Midnight quickly came when we heard the fireworks going off, managing to get a clear view of them so we could snap photos. The show only lasted for 10 minutes, to my amazement, but it was a special way to celebrate the passing of another year. I recommend Asiatique to anyone looking for something fun to do in Thailand's capital. It is accessible by ferry, bus, or taxi and a perfect place to shop for souvenirs.

Don't ask me about the significance of its unique name "Asiatique," as I haven't a clue about it. But if you happen to visit this nifty night market and discover the history of the name, please do be sure to inform me. Thanks!

Travel is not just what I do but it is who I am. When I first traveled abroad in high school as a foreign exchange student, little did I know that it would serve as the threshold of a lifetime interest in globetrotting. Now nearly 10 years later, I have lived in four countries and plan to do much more traveling in years to come. The world of teaching English has given me incredible opportunity to engage in cultural anthropology and I certainly can't get enough of the language learning process as a polyglot in the making. My personal website is currently under construction but I also maintain a micro-blog on facebook that enables me to share my insights and experiences with my ever-growing following. All in all, I am most proud to be known as a global citizen, a reference I accept with humility and honor. Blogging is rad! Many thanks (muchas gracias, feichang ganxie, grazie un millon, fala menogu) to KFTW for allowing me this platform to connect with the world and vice versa. St. Augustine said it best: “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page."
