Mediterranean Pen Pals

Yesterday I encountered the delight of receiving a response from my new penfriend contact in Turkey. A Turkish kindergarten class wrote me back after receiving my Mercy Centre postcard from Thailand when I was there two months ago. Nicole Brewer, Iluv2globetrot co-founder, organized a pen pal project on her organization's facebook group page earlier this year. So I expressed interest in participating. To learn more about this growing global org, check out my guest interview with Nicole located in my earlier blog posts (Dec. 2013). The following is the original letter the class wrote and emailed to me (sun):

Dear Mr. Charles,

The ‘’Lucky Ladybugs’’ kindergarten class was very surprised and delighted to receive your letter about one week before school was out. We looked up Thailand on the globe, talked about what they knew about it and if any of their parents had ever been there. I asked them to share what they thought you would like to know about our class, then we worked together to compose the following reply:

Harmoni: It was very nice for you to send us a letter.

Damla: We play hide and seek in the garden.

Julian: We love to play Star Wars and Legos.

Nil: We can write and draw and we are good children.

Deniz: We like to eat green beans and drink milk.

Güliz: We like to eat mantı (Turkish pasta) and drink Ayran. I got a piano.

Mert: I like to play Legos and ride the scooter.

Harmoni: I sometimes like to have parties after school.

Can A.: We had a school show, it was perfect! If you came you would have really liked it.

Zeynep: Our class is so nice you would love it if you came to visit.

Lara: Can you come and play in the garden?

Thank you Charles, we hope you enjoy your trip back to America, and congratulations on your graduation! Güle Güle! That’s what we say when someone goes on a journey, it means ‘Go smiling’

Ms. Ramona and the Lucky Ladybugs

God Bless the children!

Travel is not just what I do but it is who I am. When I first traveled abroad in high school as a foreign exchange student, little did I know that it would serve as the threshold of a lifetime interest in globetrotting. Now nearly 10 years later, I have lived in four countries and plan to do much more traveling in years to come. The world of teaching English has given me incredible opportunity to engage in cultural anthropology and I certainly can't get enough of the language learning process as a polyglot in the making. My personal website is currently under construction but I also maintain a micro-blog on facebook that enables me to share my insights and experiences with my ever-growing following. All in all, I am most proud to be known as a global citizen, a reference I accept with humility and honor. Blogging is rad! Many thanks (muchas gracias, feichang ganxie, grazie un millon, fala menogu) to KFTW for allowing me this platform to connect with the world and vice versa. St. Augustine said it best: “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page."
