The perfect weekend getaway for a solo traveler!

If you are traveling to Los Angeles, I highly recommend paying a visit to the West Hollywood area (better known as WeHo). It’s the perfect place to spend a few days as a solo traveler. It’s a safe, well kept neighborhood and I never worry about exploring alone, even at night.

While I have traveled to this neighborhood more times than I can count, I recently spent three nights in WeHo and had a fantastic experience. The main arterial where most of my activities took place are on Beverly Boulevard.

I typically use Airbnb for my accommodations; however, I stayed at a small boutique motel on Beverly Blvd. I have used the Beverly Inn before and always have a pleasant stay. It’s a no frills, clean, and inexpensive inn run by a nice family.

There is a lovely market across the street called Erewhon Natural Foods (similar to Whole Foods), but buyers beware – it’s pricey! If you take your time to peruse the store though, you will find some affordable items.

While locals drive everywhere, and I mean everywhere, I walk! I will never understand why people don’t walk in LA, because the weather is gorgeous and it’s hard to discover if you are driving. If you prefer public transportation, bus options are aplenty on Beverly Blvd and the surrounding area.

With that said, I recommend exploring Beverly Blvd between La Brea and La Cienega Blvd (east/west), La Brea from Beverly to 3rd St (north/south), and 3rd St between La Brea and La Cienega (east/west). In addition, you can even walk to Santa Monica Blvd to eat at my favorite restaurant – Hugo’s West Hollywood.

MY TOP PICKS FOR WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN WEHO

New Beverly Cinema

A cool, historic theater that offers classic double features for a mere $8.00. Often times, the director or other film personnel attend the screening for a Q&A.

The Grove

This mega shopping center has it all including a movie theater, shopping, dining, celebrity signings, where Extra with Mario Lopez and Maria Menounos films, and a Farmer’s Market.

Hugo’s West Hollywood

As noted above, my favorite restaurant! The venue offers a phenomenal menu featuring healthy, organic food. A great first visit would be during happy hour, because you can indulge in $3 beers, $4 house wines, $5 cocktails and 50% off starters M-F from 3-7pm.

Nick Metropolis Collectible Furniture

Words cannot begin to describe the uniqueness of this place! There is so much to feast your eyes on that you will find it difficult to part ways. Be on the lookout for none other than Nick himself. This man is a true gem and one of the most interesting people I have ever had the pleasure of chatting with.

Beverly Inn

As noted above, I recommend this motel for its great location and inexpensive rates.

Nakkara on Beverly

Here you will find delicious, reasonably priced Thai-inspired food. Great service, cute sidewalk patio, and just one block from the Beverly Inn.

Pan Pacific Park Recreation Center

An impressive city park that will make you forget you are in a major city. The park offers an auditorium, barbecue pits, baseball diamond, basketball courts, play area for the kiddos, indoor gym, picnic tables, restrooms, and paths for jogging or strolling.

Swingers Diner

This is another favorite restaurant. A fun, hip atmosphere to nosh on relatively healthy food including numerous vegetarian options. The venue offers reasonably priced food and drinks including a great early bird special M-F until 11am. This special is only $4.75 for 2 organic eggs, 2 pancakes or 1 slice of french toast, and your choice of bacon or sausage.

CBS Television City

While I have not participated, if you want to be on The Price is Right, here is your chance “to come on down”. The studio is within one block of the Beverly Inn.

Beverly Center

This mall is the epitome of upscale! Over 100 stores and numerous dining options to choose from. Also a great place to kick back and do some people watching.

Street Art

Since street art is one of the things I look for when I travel, I was pleasantly surprised to find a number of pieces that were new to me. If this appeals to you as well, be sure to watch for it when you are walking around. You will most likely capture something that I did not.

I hope you get an opportunity to experience this pleasant neighborhood in my favorite U.S. city. Diversity, good eats, entertainment, history and beauty await you in West Hollywood.

I have been living in Chicago for the past 7 years until a recent return to my hometown of Madison, WI. For the past 3 years, I was a freelance writer for the Chicago Tribune. It started with a blog about Couchsurfing and led to a second blog about events and venues in Chicago.I enjoyed writing so much that I started my own blog and travel/leisure Facebook page. I travel as much as possible and can't wait to write about it when I get home. My current addiction is Europe. I can't get enough and explore new countries every year.
