“I’m Barbara, owner of the Mocking Bird Hill Hotel. The hotel is located in Port Antonio, on a hill in the north-east region of Jamaica. It’s a peaceful location with a beautiful landscape.
I was born in Jamaica, lived in Germany for 17 years then came back 15 years ago and started this business in order to help young people find their way in this field and, while at the same time supporting an eco-friendly tourism.
We only have ten rooms, since the majority of the land is taken up by our beautiful 6.20-acres wide gardens. Gravel paths lead the guests so they can walk in the gardens and plunge into meditation or in some reading. We have an area which we created especially for weddings. The guests can also see the various species of birds, particularly in the coolest hours of the day. TV is banned.
Ecology and recycling are fundamental. We recycle old dishes using them as flower saucers, and the pool water is stored in huge tanks to avoid dispersing it in the ocean or the soil.
We do recycling, we have solar panels for electric energy, and we store rainwater so we can use it again. Our tanks can contain up to 200.000 liters of water.
Back in 1998 we were certified with a ‘Green Globe’ for our eco-friendly commitment.
We organize many activities: our guests can meet local people, go to church, take part in religious ceremonies, make naturalistic excursions, visit the schools and show their support through donations”.
