“My name is Hattalla. I’m an artisan who creates sand bottles in Petra. I’ve been doing this job since I was fifteen. My father taught me everything about this job, all the secrets of sand bottle-making, right here in his shop.
To create the sand bottles I use different types of colored rocks, which come from Petra, and I smash them until they become fine sand. I store all the sand in big jars according to color.
The tools I need to create sand bottles are: a spoon, a funnel, and a long and thin iron thread.
First off, I pour several colors in the bottle to create the base of the drawing. Then I keep adding small amounts of sand where necessary and use the iron thread to move the sand and draw the shapes I want.
When the drawing is done, I fill the bottle with sand to the brim and press it in down the middle with the iron thread to remove all the air from the bottle. This way the sand will become solid and won’t move. Lastly, I seal the bottle with a mixture of glue and water.
Sand bottle making is a precision job that tells the story of our country through the drawings in the sand“.
