“I’m Boris, owner of Lambiek, an original comic book shop. It was opened by my father in 1968, one of the first to open in Europe. When he was young he was obsessed with a Dutch comic book called ‘Tom Puss’.
One day he went to a comic book shop that sold old comics. ‘Tom Puss’ was very popular at the moment so he wanted to buy it.
Since it was a new comic, the owner of that shop still didn’t have it. So he told my father: “If I had that comic book, I’d be famous!”.
My father found that comic book and stole his idea, opening up his own comic book store after a short period of time. His friends helped him out by giving him the comics they didn’t read in order to make the comic book store look like the real deal.
Everything we have is stored in alphabetical order. We have comics in English, French, German, and we also have mangas.
Most of the comics come from the USA and the Netherlands, but it’s not hard to find comics from the rest of the world.
Some of our most expensive comics are the first releases of ‘Tintin’ and ‘Snatch’, the ‘Big Baby’ by Charles Bruns, and publications by Jerry Painting.
One of the series which sold out the most in Holland was ‘Black Hole’ by Charles Bruns, a comic which is more than 15 years old but is still very popular. The story focuses on a mysterious illness similar to HIV.
In addition to the most famous artists, there are also private artists who produce comics on their own and then bring the copies to comic book shops around the world to make themselves known.
We have releases by many illustrators: Jerry Ghitar, André Franken, Peyo, Peter Pontiak who is famous for ‘Dan Durf’, Janoux, Josh Schwarte, James Wuthering, Mark Beier, Kim Deiek, Dan Clodes, Kris Ware…
We have a special room for exhibitions where the artists can display their works throughout the year.
Apart from comic books and posters, we also sell lots of action figures featuring the most famous comic book characters, from ‘Tintin’ to ‘Asterix and Obelix’ ”.
