“I’m from Bangladesh and I’m a taxi driver in New York City. I graduated but I couldn’t get a job. Coming to New York was my dream and finally I made it. I’m doing well and meet with people from all over the world.
I do a 12-hour shift, from 5pm to 5am, usually for six days, sometimes seven. I live a good life with what I make right now.
Anyone who has a green card or US passport can drive a taxi after they get their license. It’s a tough job because the shifts are long, and the prolonged sitting hours often cause back pain and neck pain.
Sometimes we also have problems with passengers who run away to avoid paying. Sometimes they have knives, but there’s a law which forbids us to run after them for the money”.
