Havasupai Tribe: our precious land – I

“I’m Matt Putesoy, born and raised in Supai, Arizona, where I’ve been living for 42 years. This is a very sacred place for us.

In our stories, which are similar to those in the Bible, our people came from the center of the earth. There were three worlds before this one we’re living in, and the one where we originated from was the center of the earth, the confluence of the Grand Canyon.

Our prophecy tells that there were four races of man, the four sacred colors: red, white, yellow, and black. As they came out of the ground, the red people stayed here, while the others went their separate ways. When the end of the world will come, the four races of man will unite again and we will go back to our aboriginal land.

We are called Havasu Baaja, or Havasupai in English, which means ‘People of the blue green waters’; we’re also guardians of the great canyon because we take care of this land, its spring waters, its animals and plants, all sacred elements.

There are no cars in our village, only horses. We have a store, a clinic, a post office where mail still comes in by mule train, an elementary school up to 8th grade, a cafeteria, and a church.

In our tribal offices, the 7 council members who were elected though general election, oversee the tribe’s best interests.

The prophecy says that one day the Supai Kachina, a blessed member of the tribe, will leave the Supai Canyon and come on top of the world to tell the people of all the bad things happening on Mother Earth and warn them of the end of the world”.
